Illinois State House District 77 issued the following announcement on July 26
A proposal aimed at curbing skyrocketing property taxes backed by state Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Northlake, was recently signed into law.
“Families are being forced out of their homes as property taxes have continued to rise in our community,” Willis said. “Middle-class families need property tax relief now and this new law takes action by creating a fund that offers relief directly to taxpayers.”
Willis supported Senate Bill 39, which was recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker to establish an Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund. The fund would allow property tax rebates to be provided to homeowners claiming a general homestead exemption. Additionally, Willis supported legislation to create a Property Tax Relief Task Force charged with reviewing best practices and providing recommendations by the end of the year on how to tackle high property tax rates in Illinois.
“This proposal is a good first step, but we must remain vigilant and look at long-term reforms that will reverse the years-long trend of increased property taxes,” Willis said. “I look forward to working with the bipartisan Property Tax Relief Task Force so we can deliver tangible savings to homeowners across Illinois.”
