The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015 late last week. The bill was shepherded by U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the committee's chairman, and Dick Durbin (D-IL).

Wheaton City Council passes ordinance to regulate garage sales

The Wheaton City Council recently enacted an ordinance that places limits on garage sales, defined as sales, bartering, trading or giveaways conducted outdoors or partially outdoors. The ordinance prohibits residents from operating a garage sale at a single address before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m., on more than two consecutive days, more than two times in a calendar year or on a public right-of-way.

Lipinski, Quigley urge fellow lawmakers to extend positive train control deadline

U.S. Reps. Dan Lipinski (D-Dist. 3) and Mike Quigley (D-Dist. 5) joined leaders of the passenger- and freight-rail industry recently in urging Congress to take immediate action to extend the upcoming deadline for implementing positive train control (PTC) safety technology and prevent a shutdown of the nation’s passenger- and freight-rail systems.

College of DuPage board votes to terminate Breuder's contract

Robert Breuder’s six-year tenure as president of the College of DuPage (COD) ended after its Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday to terminate his employment. His termination was the result of the college finding evidence of misconduct and mismanagement, which Breuder participated in, oversaw or failed to prevent, the board said.

Lisle releases September mosquito-activity report

Lisle Township recently posted a mosquito status report for September. The report indicated much of the Chicago area was impacted by three to four major floodwater mosquito-annoyance periods. "The above-normal temperature pattern, including three days in the 90s and 15 days at 80 degrees or above, created ideal conditions for the mosquitoes to be a significant factor," the report said.

Naperville residents warned to beware utility-payment phone scam

Phone scams are on the rise in Naperville lately, with more and more residents filing complaints with the Naperville Police Department. Some recent scams involve residents receiving calls from people pretending to be Naperville city employees attempting to collect on an outstanding utility bill.

The Wheaton Bicycle Advisory Committee Subcommittee of the Environmental Improvement Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. today. Wesley St. The agenda will consist of approval of minutes, the October Walk/Bike to School Police Bike Project Update, Illinois Prairie Path 2016 and recruiting new committee members.

Active-shooter drill to train first-responders held at Wheaton College

Wheaton police and fire departments conducted an active-shooter simulation exercise on the campus of Wheaton College on Monday. “This exercise was imperative for Wheaton’s first-responders so we could get hands-on practice in how we would respond to a crisis like an active-shooter situation,” Wheaton Fire Chief Bill Schultz said.
