Wheaton police and fire departments conducted an active-shooter simulation exercise on the campus of Wheaton College on Monday.

“This exercise was imperative for Wheaton’s first-responders so we could get hands-on practice in how we would respond to a crisis like an active-shooter situation,” Wheaton Fire Chief Bill Schultz said.

Monday morning's exercise was the first time Wheaton police and fire personnel have collaborated with the college.

“We are fortunate to have Wheaton College’s help to make this exercise a valuable learning opportunity for our first-responders,” Schultz said.

The exercise also gave Wheaton College an opportunity to implement emergency-preparedness plans.

“Collaboration with the city's police and fire departments is vital to the safety of our campus community,” Bob Norris, chief of public safety at Wheaton College, said. "We pray that this type of situation never happens, but it is wise to be prepared for every contingency. We're grateful for the strong relationship we have with the city's emergency-response teams and for the opportunity to include a live drill in our emergency-preparedness activities.”
