Phone scams are on the rise in Naperville lately, with more and more residents filing complaints with the Naperville Police Department.
Some recent scams involve residents receiving calls from people pretending to be Naperville city employees attempting to collect on an outstanding utility bill. The subjects placing these calls advise people that they need to make immediate payment, and many of these callers threaten the victim with shutting off electric service if the victim does not provide immediate payment, the Naperville Police Department said.
In some cases, the caller provides a toll-free 800 phone number, which when called has an outgoing message claiming to be the Naperville Electric Department.
Naperville police said the city does not solicit payments over the phone and would never use a toll-free phone number. Also, in past instances, caller IDs have displayed actual City of Naperville phone numbers, which have been "spoofed" and do not accurately reflect the call’s origin.
If anyone receives such calls, Naperville police said residents should call them immediately.
