GLEN ELLYN PARK DISTRICT: Discover the Health Benefits of Platform Tennis
Glen Ellyn Park District issued the following announcement on Sept. 17.
As with any fast-paced sport, platform tennis offers a myriad of health benefits, both physical and mental. From a mental standpoint, the game requires intense concentration, as the ball has less distance to travel between players on the smaller court. The focus required to stay alert and be able to address the ball during each play helps clear the mind, reducing overall stress. The game can be played with single participants, but is more commonly enjoyed in teams of doubles. Playing in pairs makes it even more fun, and adds a social element to the game. Feeling included, and enjoying time with friends and family, leads to better mental health.
From a physical perspective, platform tennis is incredible. Not only do players burn calories from the fast style of play, enhancing their cardiovascular fitness level, they improve their hand/eye and overall body coordination as they continue to practice and perfect their game. Agility and flexibility are also improved, which helps to prevent injury, especially in older players. The game allows participants to improve their reflexes, as quick movements are necessary to score points. Overall balance is also improved, as leg and foot muscles are developed over time.
Platform tennis, while fast-paced, is easy to play and is less physically exhausting than regular tennis; this makes it an ideal way for older adults to get moderate physical exercise. Research indicates that adults who continue to exercise as they age have fewer instances of Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. And as heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in adult women, regular cardiovascular exercise helps to reduce those statistics as well.
Trying out a new form of exercise can lead to new friendships and a new favorite way to get and to stay healthy. This October, the Glen Ellyn Park District is offering Quick Start Paddle for ages 18 and up and Kids Paddle & Pizza for ages 5-14. To try out the sport of Platform Tennis before committing to a class, register for the free Platform Tennis Open House being held on Friday, September 21st.
