Senator Mark Kirk supports bill to improve Illinois waterway systems

Kirk

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) applauded passage of the fiscal year 2016 Senate Appropriations Committee’s Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act on Friday.

The bill provides provides funding for the state's research laboratories and full funding to the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, which will allow for critical work on waterways to enhance the shipping of Illinois commodities through the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi River.

“This bill will provide Illinois with increased investment and research at our national laboratories that employ over 5,000 people in Lemont and Batavia, and will cut wasteful spending by reducing government printing costs,” Kirk said. “It will also help revolutionize our computer systems, modernize energy production, provide resources to clean up West Chicago’s atomic site and increase Illinois shipping through our waterways. I applaud my colleagues for their work on this bill and look forward to final passage on the Senate floor.”

The bill now heads to the Senate for final approval.
