State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-IL) is pushing for legislation that will require state agencies overseeing public land to examine policies to determine if composing materials will help reduce storm water runoff and improve the quality of land.
“Composting is a reliable method to stop pollution, cut costs and clean up contamination," Cullerton said. "We need to continue to embrace dependable practices to be more efficient as a state. Taking easy steps like this will help protect our environment and sustain natural resources for generations to come."
The Environmental Protection Agency has indicated the benefits of composing include enrichment of soil, clean up of contamination, preventing pollution and economic benefits by reducing the need for water, fertilizer and pesticides.
“If we want to ensure our children have clean water, air and ecologically safe spaces to be active, then we should continue to look for ways to be more environmentally savvy in Illinois,” Cullerton said.
House Bill 1362 unanimously passed the Senate's Environmental Committee and next moves on to the full Senate for a vote.
