Market Watch: Former MLBer David DeJesus has paid $214,022 in property taxes on Wheaton home
Illinois' highest-in-the-nation property taxes are eroding home equity and depressing home values across the state. This report is part of a Dupage Policy Journal series on recent home sales that demonstrate the consequences.
The Home: 28 Muirfield Circle in Wheaton's St. James Park subdivision is 6,700 square feet with five bedrooms and seven baths, according to Zillow.com.
The Seller: Ex-Major League baseball player David DeJesus, 38 and his wife, Kim.
DeJesus played 12 years in the majors, seven for the Kansas City Royals and two for the Chicago Cubs. He retired in 2017.
Kim (nee Iliff) is a Wheaton native and model who starred in the reality television show "The Amazing Race" in 2013. Kim graduated from Wheaton-Warrenville South High School in 1998, where she played varsity golf. Her dad, Scott, was a chemistry teacher and golf coach at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn from 1982-2015.
The Purchase: $1.050 million in Oct 2011, or $1.18 million in today's dollars.
DeJesus bought the house a month before signing a two-year, $10 million deal with the Cubs in November 2011.
The Sale: The DeJesuses are asking $1.295 million.
The Property Taxes: They have paid $214,022 in property taxes since 2011, or 17 percent of their asking price.
Their current bill of $27,802 is 2.1 percent of their asking price.
