Glen Ellyn officials announced on June 26 that refuse collection will begin one hour earlier on Monday, June 29, due to forecasted high temperatures. Residents are asked to have all refuse, recycling, and yard waste at the curb by 6 am, as collection throughout Glen Ellyn will start at that time.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Advisory for the area beginning Sunday, with high temperatures and heat index values expected to reach dangerous levels over the next week. The Village of Glen Ellyn encourages residents to take precautions to stay safe during periods of extreme heat. According to the announcement, "Excessive heat can be especially dangerous for older adults, young children, and those with certain medical conditions. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may need assistance during hot weather."

The Glen Ellyn Public Library will serve as an official cooling center during operating hours. Residents who need a place to cool off are encouraged to visit air-conditioned public spaces such as recreation facilities, shopping centers, or other public facilities during normal business hours. Additional area cooling centers are available, according to the Village of Glen Ellyn.

The advisory also provides several excessive heat safety tips: "Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day (10 am – 4 pm). Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen. Take breaks in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time."

Residents are reminded to protect pets by ensuring they have plenty of fresh water and shade, avoiding walks on hot pavement during peak temperatures, and bringing pets indoors whenever possible during extreme heat. For those in need of support, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Hotline is available by calling or texting 988, or through online chat at 988lifeline.org/chat. In emergencies, residents can text 911.
