The Village of Westmont, in collaboration with the Westmont Public Library and other local agencies, is continuing its efforts to promote dementia awareness and education this winter. As part of its designation as a Dementia-Friendly community, Westmont is offering several programs designed for individuals living with dementia, their caregivers, and those interested in learning more about the topic.

The library’s upcoming events include “Songs of the Season with a Twist” on December 3, featuring award-winning vocalist Maureen Christine performing music from the 1950s through the 1970s. The program aims to provide an interactive musical experience for attendees.

On January 7, the library will screen "Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter," an Academy Award-nominated documentary that follows a daughter's journey as her mother progresses through Alzheimer’s disease. A discussion led by Patti Terkovich and Mary Ferguson from Birches Assisted Living & Memory Care will follow the film.

A program titled "Understanding the Stages of Alzheimer’s" is scheduled for February 4. Patti Terkovich and Mary Ferguson will discuss typical patterns seen in dementia progression and offer guidance to caregivers on what to expect as well as strategies for planning ahead.

Additionally, the Memory Cafe will meet on December 15, January 19, and February 16. These gatherings provide opportunities for people living with dementia and their care partners to socialize in a supportive environment. The sessions are free and presented in partnership with The Birches Assisted Living & Memory Care and Oasis Senior Advisors.

Advance registration is required for all programs. Registration opens November 15 at 9 a.m., either online via the Westmont Public Library website or by phone at 630-869-6150.
