Westmont, Illinois – The Westmont Police Department is reminding residents to take steps to prevent car theft as rates remain high nationwide.
“As always, we encourage citizens to be diligent when protecting their property from theft,” said Westmont Chief of Police Brian Gruen. “Our steering wheel lock program assists car owners from theft, however, we ask everyone to take a look at their personal habits and strive to adopt effective safety practices.”
Federal data shows that motor vehicle theft continues to be a significant issue across the country. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported that a vehicle was stolen every 37 seconds.
The police department recommends several measures for car owners: always take your keys with you when leaving your vehicle, ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked, park in well-lit areas whenever possible, avoid leaving valuables inside vehicles—especially where they are visible—and consider using steering wheel locks.
