Westmont, Illinois – The Westmont Police Department is urging residents to take steps to protect their vehicles from theft. “As always, we encourage citizens to be diligent when protecting their property from theft,” said Westmont Chief of Police Brian Gruen. “Our steering wheel lock program assists car owners from theft, however, we ask everyone to take a look at their personal habits and strive to adopt effective safety practices.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that in 2024, a motor vehicle was stolen every 37 seconds in the United States. To reduce risk, officials recommend that car owners remove keys when leaving their vehicles, ensure all windows and doors are locked, park in well-lit areas when possible, and avoid leaving valuables visible inside cars.

To help prevent auto theft locally, the Westmont Police Department is offering free steering wheel locks to residents while supplies last. These devices were donated by Hyundai Motor America. Residents must provide proof of residency and vehicle registration to receive a lock.

Steering wheel locks can be requested in person at the Westmont Police Department located at 500 N. Cass Ave., Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., excluding holidays. Each resident may receive one lock per vehicle due to limited availability.

For more information, residents can contact the department at nmichalek@westmont.il.gov or call 630-981-6358.
