As the fall season brings cooler weather, many residents turn to backyard fire pits and bonfires for outdoor gatherings. However, these activities can lead to accidents if proper safety measures are not followed.

Westmont Fire Safety Director Neil Berkowitz emphasized the importance of preparation before starting any outdoor fire. “A safe bonfire starts with smart preparation,” Berkowitz said. “Keep it small, keep it supervised, and keep it safe — so the only thing that burns this fall are the marshmallows.”

The National Fire Protection Association recommends several precautions for those planning to have a fire outdoors. Only clean, seasoned, and dry firewood should be used—such as dried logs or branches without leaves or greenery. Fires should be started at least 25 feet away from structures or anything flammable. It is also important to clear away dry leaves, brush, and low-hanging branches in the area.

Officials advise against burning on dry or windy days due to increased risk of fires spreading out of control. Keeping fires small allows for better management and reduces hazards. Children and pets should be closely supervised around fires and never allowed to play too close.

The use of gasoline or other flammable liquids on campfires is strongly discouraged. Residents are urged to have water, a garden hose, or dirt nearby to extinguish flames if necessary. Before leaving an area where a fire has been burning, ensure that the fire is completely out and never leave it unattended.

In case clothing catches fire, individuals should stop, drop, and roll until the flames are extinguished. Burns should be treated immediately by cooling with water for three to five minutes, covering with a clean cloth, and seeking medical help if needed.
