The City of Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission, together with SCARCE, will hold its annual Pumpkin Smash drop-off event on Saturday, November 8. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon and will take place at Commuter Parking Lot 9, located at Liberty Drive and Carlton Avenue.

Residents are invited to bring their pumpkins for composting instead of sending them to the landfill. Organizers ask that all decorations be removed before dropping off pumpkins.

According to city officials, Wheaton has organized pumpkin collections for composting since 2014. Pumpkins are made up of about 90 percent water, which makes them beneficial for soil enrichment and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
