The City of Wheaton has issued a reminder to residents about the proper ways to dispose of fallen leaves this season. According to city guidelines, leaves can be placed in containers no larger than 35 gallons or in biodegradable paper bags, with each container or bag weighing no more than 50 pounds. A yard waste, organics, or garbage sticker must be attached to each container or bag for collection.
Collection of yard waste, leaves, food scraps, and other organic materials takes place at the curb on regular garbage days. This service runs from the first full week of April through the second full week of December. For this year, the week of December 8 marks the final collection period for leaves.
The city also suggests an environmentally friendly option for residents: mulching leaves into lawns or garden beds using a lawnmower with a mulching function. This process breaks down leaves into small pieces that can be left on the lawn or spread in garden beds.
Residents are reminded not to blow or rake leaves into the street, as this can block storm sewers and potentially cause flooding. The city encourages those living near storm sewer catch basins to help keep them clear by sweeping away leaves and debris from the grates.
"Leaf burning is not permitted in the City of Wheaton."
