State Representative Amy Grant of Wheaton, Illinois, has joined a lawsuit with other Republican legislators to enforce the Illinois Constitution’s Third Reading Rule. This legal action follows the passage of Senate Bill 328, which they claim bypassed proper legislative procedures.

“In Springfield, the rules are in place to protect the taxpayers, and to ensure transparency and accountability,” said Rep. Grant. “But we’re seeing a troubling trend where the majority party is constantly cutting corners and ignoring the Constitution to rush legislation through. It’s careless and wrong.”

The Illinois Constitution mandates that bills be read on three separate days in each chamber to allow lawmakers and the public adequate time for review. According to Republican lawmakers, SB 328 did not follow this process, representing another instance where Democrats allegedly used their supermajority status to avoid scrutiny.

“This isn’t how responsible governing is supposed to work,” stated Grant. “Every time the majority ignores the rules, trust in the legislative process takes another hit. I hope this lawsuit brings an end to this carelessness form of governance.”

Senate Bill 328 faces opposition from job creators across Illinois due to concerns it could lead to an increase in abusive lawsuits, underscoring calls for a more thorough review.
