State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro expressed satisfaction with the guilty verdict in the federal corruption case against former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan. A jury found Madigan guilty of conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud, confirming misuse of his public office for personal gain.

“This verdict is a long-overdue reckoning for one of the most powerful and corrupt politicians in Illinois history,” said Sanalitro. “For decades, Madigan ran state government like a personal empire, using his influence to benefit himself and his allies at the expense of hardworking Illinoisans. Today’s decision proves that no one – not even the most powerful political figure – is above the law.”

Madigan was convicted on 10 counts; however, the jury was deadlocked on six counts and acquitted him on seven counts.

“While this verdict is a victory for justice, it does not erase the decades of damage Madigan inflicted on our state,” continued Sanalitro. “We must take this moment to finally implement real ethics reforms that prevent political corruption from happening in Illinois ever again.”

Michael J. Madigan served as Speaker of the Illinois House from 1983 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 2021, totaling an unprecedented 36 years. He was also a delegate to the 1969-70 Illinois Constitutional Convention and contributed significantly to drafting the current Illinois Constitution.
