The funeral for 26-year-old Martinez took place on November 18. He was killed in the line of duty on November 4 after being shot while responding to a traffic stop in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood. Fox 32 reported that a 23-year-old individual has been charged with first-degree murder of a police officer and other felonies in connection with the incident.
A visitation was held in Oak Lawn on November 17, where numerous first responders from across the city and state paid their respects. Martinez was assigned to the Sixth District of the Chicago Police Department and was one month away from his third anniversary with the department.
Chicago residents gathered on November 7 for a vigil at the church attended by Martinez on Chicago’s South Side. Attendees described him as a "young man with a charismatic personality and an infectious laugh."
