State Senator Seth Lewis (R-Bartlett) successfully shepherded a bill through the Senate that designates the Calvatia Gigantea, or “Giant Puffball,” as the official state mushroom. The initiative, outlined in Senate Bill 3514, was a collaborative effort with students from the Prairie School of DuPage, as reported on Apr 10, 2024.
Prairie School of DuPage Teacher Erin Hemmer commended the students' efforts, stating, “Since November, all 25 Upper Elementary scholars collected qualitative and quantitative data, surveyed over 100 Illinois stakeholders, and even held a school-wide election.” The dedication and thorough approach of the students were evident throughout the process.
The idea for the state mushroom originated from a classroom discussion on Illinois state symbols. Senator Lewis shared, “I met with these bright students earlier this year, and they expressed an interest in having a new state symbol of a mushroom. I was impressed with the amount of work they had already done and filed SB 3514 on their behalf in mid-February.”
The students actively participated in the legislative process, including testifying before the Senate State Government Committee. Hemmer and a student presented their case, supported by 174 witness slips favoring the bill filed by students, parents, and other advocates.
Senator Lewis expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration, noting, “The students continued to be involved as the bill was heard in committee, and it was my pleasure to bring it across the finish line in the Senate on Thursday.” The bill will now progress to the House of Representatives, with Rep. Michele Mussman set to champion the cause.
