State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro has taken a stand to protect motorcyclists' rights by sponsoring and passing HB5435 through the House Transportation Regulations, Roads and Bridges Committee. The bill aims to eliminate the use of noise monitoring systems by local governments that unfairly target motorcyclists on the road.
“This bill is a significant step toward ensuring fairness and accuracy in terms of how traffic noise is monitored,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “Motorcyclists should not be unfairly singled out and ticketed due to the limitations of the current technology.”
The initiative was prompted by concerns raised by ABATE of Illinois and the motorcycling community, highlighting the disproportionate penalization of motorcyclists by noise detection systems. These systems often misattribute loud exhaust sounds to motorcycles, even when other vehicles are the actual source of the noise.
The successful passage of HB5435 through the Transportation Regulations, Roads & Bridges Committee on April 2nd, with a vote of 14 to 1, reflects a victory for motorcyclists and demonstrates Rep. Sanalitro’s dedication to equitable road use policies for all Illinois drivers and riders.
Plans are in place for further discussions with the City of Chicago to ensure the fair treatment of all road users and explore beneficial applications of noise monitoring technology for the community as a whole.
