Safe Suburbs PAC founder Kevin Coyne expressed growing concerns about the arrest of three armed individuals in Naperville arrested while possessing machine guns and drugs, emphasizing a dangerous trend.
Coyne said there is a recurring pattern of armed felons coming to Naperville from outside areas to conduct criminal activities, particularly around places frequented by young people.
“We have seen repeated instances of out of town armed felons finding their way out to Naperville to do their business outside places that our young people like to go to,” Coyne told the DuPage Policy Journal.
“It's a dangerous trend that is a direct result of Illinois liberals refusal to keep dangerous criminals in jail. If Democrat officials are genuinely so concerned about guns, they should support keeping those who commit gun crimes off of our streets.”
Coyne’s comments come as DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced three men, Terrance Reed, 27, Rubin Tart, 24, and Demarveus Butler, 19, have been denied pre-trial release after being allegedly found in possession of loaded machine guns and drugs at a Naperville’s Bowlero.
All three men are from outside the area. Reed is from Chicago, Tart is from Country Club Hills and Butler is from Michigan City, Ind.
The incident in which they were arrested occurred on Dec. 2, when Naperville police officers conducting surveillance in the Bowlero parking lot observed the men in a vehicle with the incorrect display tags.
A police car pulled in front of their vehicle when they were trying to leave the parking lot, pinning it in at which time they backed into the vehicle behind them and then fled on foot.
Authorities recovered multiple weapons, drugs and a stolen vehicle during the investigation.
“When searching the vehicle, officers recovered additional weapons including a loaded Glock 19 handgun with one bullet in the chamber which was reported stolen out of Indiana, a loaded Glock 27 .40 caliber handgun with a fifty-round drum attachment that was equipped with a switch that converts the weapon into a fully automatic machine gun, a loaded American tactical omni hybrid rifle with one bullet in the chamber, three loaded magazines and two boxes of ammunition,” the press release reads.
“Officers also recovered 54 grams of cannabis, 21.4 grams of cocaine, 5.2 grams of heroin as well as three full pills and four half-pills of MDMA from the Honda.”
The men face various charges, including Possession of a Loaded Machine Gun, Armed Habitual Criminal, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon and drug-related charges.
The next court appearances for the defendants are scheduled for Jan. 2 and Jan. 12, 2024.
Tart has a long rap sheet.
He was arrested by the Chicago Police three times from October to December in 2017 alone for receiving a stolen vehicle, trespassing and a warrant violation.
In 2018 he was arrested after running away from police officers and in 2019 he was arrested for carrying a sawed off shotgun.
