Issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.

Sean Casten, who currently occupies the seat once held by Henry Hyde, recognized the 43rd Anniversary of the Hyde Amendment by advocating the elimination of it.

The Hyde Amendment was passed after Roe v. Wade. It says that, while abortion is legal, taxpayers should not be forced to pay for abortions. “It is an entirely reasonable measure,” said Jeanne Ives, Republican Candidate for Congress (IL-06). “The act of abortion is an elective procedure to which many Americans have a conscientious objection, unlike gallbladder surgery- as Mr. Casten famously asserted.

“Casten’s position is just more evidence of how extreme he is. He truly believes he knows better than you how to run your life. His ideology trumps your conscience. His ideology trumps your values. His ideology trumps your pocketbook. His ideology trumps science. And he believes that government should be used as a cudgel to beat back those with ideas and values that stand in the way of his ideology.

“Sean Casten’s rigid calls for taxpayer-funded, abortion-on-demand for all nine months of pregnancy are spiteful, extremist and at odds with the values of 6th district families. He thinks he should dictate how your money is spent and how you live your life,” Ives continued. “I am running for Congress because I believe Americans know what’s best for their lives and should be able to spend their money according to their values. In 2020, that is the choice voters have to make: more government in their lives or more freedom in their lives.”
