Village of Addison issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.
Addison Village Manager Joseph Block has announced his intent to retire at the end of the year, capping a 40-year career in Public Administration, and a nearly unheard of 32-year tenure with the Village of Addison.
In his announcement to staff, Block expressed that he and his wife, Karin, intend to relocate out of the Chicago area to be nearer to their grandchildren. He reflected on the many changes he has seen in Addison.
“Buildings have been demolished, constructed, and redeveloped. New developments have transformed the look of the Village. A great deal of time, effort and resources have been invested in updating infrastructure,” he said. “I take a great deal of pride when talking to colleagues and to former residents who stop by for a visit and tell me that the town ‘never looked better.’”
Mayor Rich Veenstra thanked Block for his commitment and dedication to the community.
“Joe’s tenure with the Village, his leadership, and his accomplishments have been a major reason for the remarkable growth and development we have seen over the past 30 years,” Veenstra said. “His mark can be seen throughout the Village. He has put together a team of dedicated professionals that meet and exceed the expectations of our residents on a daily basis.”
Block came to the Village of Addison in 1986 as Assistant Village Manager, having previously worked at the villages of Woodridge and Orland Park. He was appointed Village Manager in 1989.
During his career in Addison he oversaw the community’s recovery from the Flood of 1987 that devastated DuPage County, implementing $30 million in flood improvement projects, such as the Westwood Creek Dam & Pump Station and Louis Reservoir.
During his tenure, the Village has received three bond rating upgrades (from A to AA to AA+), and has been a leader in community relations, intergovernmental cooperation, and in the use of technology.
Mayor Veenstra and the Village Board will make an announcement about the new manager in the near future.
