Smishing scams, a form of texting scam, are increasingly common. Authorities are advising individuals to be cautious if they receive a message claiming they owe money. The advised steps include not responding to such messages, withholding personal or banking information, and avoiding opening any links or attachments from unsolicited or suspicious texts and emails.

Victims of smishing are encouraged to report the scam to law enforcement. Additionally, complaints can be filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at no cost.
