DuPage County board member Amy Grant easily bested Burt Minor Tuesday night in a three-way Republican primary race for the state House seat in District 42.

With 64 of 121 precincts reporting, Grant bagged 64.80 percent of the vote (2,126 votes) to Minor’s 22.28 percent (731 votes).Third candidate Ryan Byrne stood at 12.92 percent (424 votes).

Grant’s victory put an end to Minor’s controversial run, which at one point saw Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) leading a group of GOP leaders calling for him to withdraw from the race after he was accused of using a homosexual slur and a racial epithet to refer to GOP attorney general candidate and former Miss America Erika Harold.

Minor, the Winfield Township Republican chairman, insisted he only used the N-word once after Harold asked him what that expression meant. He also said Harold encouraged him to ask about her sexuality.

The 62-year-old Grant now moves on to the general election, where she will face off against Democrat Kathleen V. Carrier of Carol Stream in early November for the seat vacated by Ives.

"That sounds good to me," Grant told the Daily Herald while fielding congratulatory calls and texts. "I'm happy about that."
