Several Warrenville officials attended the Fourth Annual Bike Summit, recently held in Champaign.
Warrenville Planner/GIS Technician and Warrenville Bicyclists and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) Staff Liaison Ginny McIntosh, Alderman Bill Weidner, and BPAC Commissioner Kate Perkins attended the event, during which Warrenville was presented with the Initiative Award, one of only three awards presented at this year's summit.
The Bike Summit included a series of breakout sessions on topics that included the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) Complete Streets Policy, educational opportunities on bicycle friendly initiatives, the benefits of trail tourism and cultivating a culture of hospitality. The sessions also disseminated information on how to receive and implement grants for constructing a trail or bike lane.
At one of the meetings, officials from the League of Illinois Bicyclists informed attendees that the organization will now be known as Ride Illinois. The group’s leadership feels that its new moniker will better reflect the growing popularity of bicycling across the entire state, and will work to align a broader range of people with their mission.
Ed Barsotti, executive director of Ride Illinois, spoke highly of Warrenville’s award, stating it was presented to the City “for both the city’s and BPAC’s persistence in winning the national Bicycle Friendly Community designation — thus providing inspiration to other smaller-size cities seeking to do so.”
