Elmhurst officials said Friday they are introducing a community alert notification system known as CodeRED.
The city has contracted with the CodeRED system, which provides city officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire city.
Specifically, the CodeRED system will serve as the backbone of the city's emergency planning and communications outreach to those who live, work and do business in the community as well as city personnel.
CodeRED’s system capabilities include outreach via telephone calls, text messages, emails and social media in an effort to inform residents through emergency and general messages.
“We are very eager to use this technology to enhance our emergency preparedness plans,” Mayor Steven Morley said. "The types of alerts the city anticipates using the system to notify residents both citywide and in specific geographic locations includes utility emergencies, missing person notices and disaster recovery information."
The city has been provided an initial database of residential and business telephone numbers, however residents are encouraged to contact the city to ensure they are included on the database or to provide additional contact information. A test of the system is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9.
"We want to reach as many people as possible," added Don Novak, Elmhurst’s Emergency Services & Disaster Agency coordinator. "In order to guarantee that you will receive alerts we encourage you to add your information to the database."
