U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) introduced legislation last week calling for the proper disposal of worn and tattered American flags.

“The American flag stands for freedom and democracy at home and abroad, providing a window into United States history and government and accompanying our men and women in the armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice to their final resting place," Lipinski said. 

The resolution directs members of Congress to promote public awareness of flag etiquette, including the correct disposal of worn American flags. The also resolution urges House and Senate members to work with groups such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Boy Scouts of America to aid in the “respectful and dignified disposal of worn and tattered American flags in their districts and among their constituents.”

"Contact my office toll-free at 866-822-5701 to find out more information. If possible, my office can accommodate requests for flags that are flown at a specific date or time. Please be advised that requests cannot be processed more than one month prior to the date the flag would need to be flown. I am happy to provide a flag free of charge if you are a veteran.”
