The city of Elmhurst and DuPage County recently approved a project to provide 100-year rainfall flood protection for 76 homes north of the Union Pacific tracks between York Street and the Elmhurst Quarry.
The quarry project would provide flood relief for the Walnut-Evergreen-Myrtle study area, which was singled out in a study by Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. (CBBEL). The estimated $3.7 million improvement project would consist of approximately 4,200 feet of 60- to 84-inch diameter relief storm sewer pipes with an eventual outfall to the Elmhurst Quarry.
A Dec. 2 vote by the Elmhurst City Council to approve CBBEL’s proposal for engineering services for the quarry project included site surveys, modeling updates, preliminary and final engineering plans, coordination with the county, formal permitting, and bid assistance.
The council’s action came as a result of a recommendation from the Public Works Committee to make the quarry project the top stormwater improvement project priority.
Following the recent final approval by DuPage County, work on the project could commence as soon as August with a completion target of June 2016.
In addition to the quarry project, the city also recently allocated $1 million of its 2015 budget to the possible purchase of properties in the flood-affected areas. Properties that could be purchased have not yet been identified and Public Works will evaluate such a solution as part of ongoing studies. The $1 million comes in addition to the $6.8 million budgeted for stormwater capital projects.
