Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves recently highlighted a restoration project, resident survey and retirement of a village police chief in a recent mayor's report.
Reaves said the Lemont Quarry Restoration Project between CITGO Lemont Refinery, Wildlife Habitat Council and the Lemont community officially began Nov. 1.
Reaves said the first phase of the project involved identifying the area's native and invasive species. The second phase of the project is scheduled for spring 2015, which will focus on restoration and making the site more user friendly for the community, Reaves said.
"It took many volunteers to accomplish the first phase of the project, and we thank each and every one of you," Reaves said. "As we move forward, it’s our hope that others will join in the quest to make our quarry area a true recreational destination."
Reaves also said the village received 15 responses from residents regarding a feedback questionnaire in the September newsletter. The questionnaire asked residents what they would like the village board to focus on in the future.
Resident responses ranged from building senior housing to more visible street signs and train station parking, Reaves said. Other responses involved keeping costs down, developing the appeal of the town, revamping the downtown area, and developing the village in a sustainable manner.
Reaves also noted the retirement of Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy, who served the village for 11 years. Shaughnessy recently received the Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart’s 2014 Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Award of Merit.
"We wish you well, chief, and thank you for all you have done for the Village of Lemont, our police department, and the entire community," Reaves said.
Reaves was elected mayor in 2009. Prior to his election as mayor, he served as a village trustee for six years.
Reaves is founder and president of Integrated Warehouse Systems, 1316 Marquette Drive, Romeoville, Ill. The business is family run.
Reaves and his wife Sherrie live in Lemont and have four children.
