Ramp closures and detours scheduled at O’Hare Interchange for toll plaza relocation
Overnight ramp closures and detours are scheduled this week at the O’Hare Interchange on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), as announced by the Illinois Tollway on July 6. The closures are required for ongoing work to relocate the toll plaza in preparation for a future Illinois Department of Transportation project on I-190.
According to the announcement, starting at 10 p.m. Monday, July 6, ramps connecting southbound I-294 and eastbound I-90 to westbound I-190 will close. The ramps are expected to reopen by 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 7. If work is not completed during this window, additional overnight closures may be scheduled later in the week.
Detour routes will be posted: southbound I-294 traffic will use westbound Irving Park Road and northbound Mannheim Road to access westbound I-190; eastbound I-90 traffic will be routed onto southbound I-294 before following the same detour. Once reopened, two lanes through the plaza will be available with a shift to the left, while post-plaza ramp traffic remains reduced to one lane as preparations continue for upcoming improvements at the interchange.
The final stage of construction includes removal of a tolling equipment building, median island removal, pavement patching, and completion of new roadway pavement. Work is anticipated to finish within this year. This project forms part of broader efforts by the Illinois Department of Transportation aimed at improving operations along I-190 and access to O’Hare International Airport. Planned improvements include relocating the existing toll plaza control building as well as upgrades such as ramp reconstruction, lighting installation, and new roadway signage.
Construction zone speed limits remain enforced around-the-clock throughout all affected areas. Drivers are reminded that state law requires changing lanes or slowing down when approaching vehicles with activated hazard lights—violations can result in significant fines or jail time if workers are endangered.
