Overnight closures and detours set for York Road in Bensenville next week
The Illinois Tollway announced on April 2 that overnight closures and detours will begin next week on York Road in Bensenville to allow for the installation of steel beams as part of the I-490/Illinois Route 390 Tollway Interchange Project.
These closures are necessary to create a safe work zone while construction crews place bridge beams for new flyover ramp bridges. The project aims to connect the new I-490 Tollway with Illinois Route 390, providing improved access to York Road, Irving Park Road, and O'Hare International Airport. Electronic message signs and construction signage will be used to alert drivers ahead of time, according to the announcement.
The first closure is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, starting at 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. the following morning. During this period, York Road between Devon Avenue and Irving Park Road will be closed, and eastbound Thorndale Avenue will not have access to York Road. Detours will direct traffic along Irving Park Road (Illinois Route 19), Illinois Route 83, and Devon Avenue. Two more nights of similar closures are planned in early April; if beam placement is not completed during these times, additional overnight closures may be scheduled as needed.
Periodic overnight closures on York Road are expected through fall as crews continue installing beams for six interchange bridges linking Illinois Route 390 with I-490 and O’Hare International Airport. The construction is being coordinated with DuPage County, Cook County, Village of Bensenville, Chicago Department of Aviation, local fire departments, and police agencies.
Construction updates can be found in the Projects section on the Illinois Tollway’s website at www.illinoistollway.com. The full-access interchange project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
Drivers are reminded that speed limits in work zones are enforced around-the-clock and that Illinois’ “Move Over Law” requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing vehicles stopped with hazard lights activated. Penalties include fines up to $25,000 or jail time for hitting a roadway worker; failing to move over can result in fines up to $10,000 or license suspension.
