Judge orders pretrial detention for Hinsdale boutique burglary suspect
DuPage County prosecutors announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted pretrial detention for Monroe Shivers, a suspect in a burglary at Hinsdale’s Kelsey Resale Boutique, while three co-defendants were released on non-detainable charges.
According to Hinsdale police, officers responded around 3:36 a.m. on January 27, 2026, to reports of suspicious vehicles near S. Washington Street. They were directed to Kelsey Resale Boutique at 49 S. Washington St., where two vehicles reportedly fled upon their arrival. Officers pursued a Nissan Altima, and multiple occupants fled on foot near the Hinsdale train depot. Three suspects were apprehended at the scene, while a fourth was arrested later that morning following a separate call. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office emphasized that the case remains at the charging stage and all defendants are presumed innocent pending trial.
Prosecutors have said that Monroe Shivers, aged 33, faces four counts: Burglary (Class 2 felony), Theft of $10,000–$100,000 (Class 2 felony), Retail Theft (Class 3 felony), and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding (Class 4 felony). His co-defendants—Cortney Shivers, Ronnie Hardy, and Jeremiah Brown—were charged with burglary and theft counts as well as Resisting a Police Officer (Class A misdemeanor). Judge Dieden granted detention for Monroe Shivers but released the other three on charges described as non-detainable. All four are scheduled for a court date on February 23, 2026.
DuPage officials noted a similar case involving Kelsey Resale Boutique in Hinsdale with a different pretrial outcome under the SAFE-T Act framework. On September 21, 2023, prosecutors said Terry Johnson was released pending trial despite being charged with Armed Violence (Class X felony) and Burglary (Class 2 felony). Conditions included GPS monitoring at $10 per day and an order to stay 1,000 feet from the store while he was on parole. This case also cited an alleged May 24, 2023 burglary involving seven offenders and approximately $68,000 in stolen merchandise.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office is described as the second-largest State’s Attorney’s Office in Illinois and one of the largest county-based prosecutor's offices nationwide. It serves nearly one million residents with over 150 attorneys and staff members focused on criminal prosecution and public safety functions.
