The Illinois Tollway announced on April 6 that overnight and long-term ramp closures with detours will continue throughout April as part of ongoing reconstruction at the I-290/I-88 Interchange at the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). The agency said these closures are necessary to safely accommodate bridge reconstruction and maintain access to traffic, and delays are expected.

This construction is part of efforts to rebuild and reconfigure key bridges along southbound I-294 over the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and I-290. Temporary overnight ramp closures with posted detours will take place at multiple interchange ramps connecting I-294, I-290, I-88, and Roosevelt Road. These measures are intended to support pavement repairs, protective shielding installation, bridge reconstruction, pavement removal, and utility work. Construction signs will be installed in advance to alert drivers about lane changes or detours.

In addition to nightly lane restrictions on both directions of I-88 between York Road and I-290, periodic closures of certain ramps—including westbound I-290 to westbound Roosevelt Road—will occur without posted detours. However, a long-term closure affecting westbound I-290 traffic heading toward southbound I-294 will have an alternate route using westbound Roosevelt Road ramp; tolls will be waived at Illinois Route 83 Toll Plaza for vehicles following this detour. Other scheduled work includes noisewall construction and shoulder improvements at the Roosevelt Road Interchange.

Ramp and local road closures are being coordinated with several local municipalities including the Village of Berkeley, Village of Hillside, City of Elmhurst, Village of Oak Brook, Proviso Township as well as fire and police departments. Updated closure information can be found on the Illinois Tollway’s website in the Projects section.

This effort is part of the $4 billion Central Tri-State Tollway Project aimed at reconstructing and widening roadway between Balmoral Avenue and 95th Street under Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future capital program. More than 220,000 vehicles use this corridor daily.

The agency reminds motorists that construction zone speed limits remain in effect around-the-clock during construction season; a 45 mph limit applies on affected sections of I‑294. Drivers must comply with all posted warnings—including "Move Over Law" requirements—or face significant penalties including fines or jail time for violations.
