Westbound I-290 nightly closures and detours scheduled in June for bridge work at I-294 interchange
Nightly closures and detours on westbound Interstate 290 at the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) are scheduled to continue in June to accommodate bridge beam placement as part of ongoing reconstruction work at the I-290/I-88 Interchange at I-294, according to a June 5 announcement from the Illinois Tollway. Delays are expected during this period.
The closures will begin Saturday, June 6, with full roadway closures and detours taking place between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, with extended hours on Saturday nights until 7 a.m. No closures are planned for Friday nights. During these times, traffic will be rerouted onto westbound I-88 to Roosevelt Road and then northbound Illinois Route 83 (Kingery Highway) to re-access westbound I-290.
After completion of beam placement on the southbound I-294 over westbound I-290 bridge, similar nightly lane closures—including periodic full closures—will be scheduled on eastbound I-290 for additional bridge work. These eastbound restrictions are expected to continue into July. During this phase, ramps connecting eastbound I-290 to southbound I-294 and westbound I-88 as well as ramps from southbound I-294 to eastbound I-290 will also be detoured as needed.
Additional construction activities throughout June include overnight ramp and local road closures around the interchange for pavement repairs, bridge reconstruction, pavement removal, utility work, and other improvements. Traffic configurations such as single-lane reductions or lane shifts will remain in effect on several ramps during construction periods.
Drivers are encouraged by the Illinois Tollway to consider alternate routes such as Veterans Tollway (I‑355) when feasible due to anticipated delays along affected corridors. Coordination is ongoing with local municipalities including Berkeley, Hillside, Elmhurst, Oak Brook, and Proviso Township as well as state agencies for these operations.
The $4 billion Central Tri-State Tollway Project aims to reconstruct and widen roadways between Balmoral Avenue and 95th Street under the Move Illinois capital program—a long-term effort intended to improve mobility across northern Illinois tollways.
