Weekend detour scheduled at Orchard Road Toll Plaza on I-88 for improvement work
A weekend-long ramp closure is scheduled to begin this weekend at the Orchard Road Interchange on the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88), according to a June 3 announcement from the Illinois Tollway. The closure is part of ongoing toll plaza improvements and will require a posted detour for drivers.
Electronic message signs and construction signage will be in place in advance to alert drivers about construction, ramp closures, and detours. Up-to-date information will be available on the Illinois Tollway website through the Daily Construction Alert. All planned work is dependent on weather conditions.
The full closure of the ramp connecting eastbound I-88 to Orchard Road is set to start at 8 p.m. Friday, June 5, for median removal, paving, and a stage change. The ramp is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, June 8. After reopening, traffic will use the left plaza lane while a work zone remains on the right side of the ramp. During this period, drivers will be directed via detour signs to continue east on I-88 and exit at Illinois Route 31 before routing north to Orchard Road.
Currently, the affected ramp operates as a single lane and will remain so through summer as crews remove existing barrier walls and equipment before installing new tolling infrastructure. Additional improvements include pavement repairs, shoulder work, guardrail installation, electrical upgrades, and updated signage. Another weekend-long detour is planned later in the year.
Closures are being coordinated with multiple agencies, including the Illinois Department of Transportation as well as local county authorities and emergency services in DuPage County, Kane County, Aurora Township, fire departments, and police departments.
The project forms part of Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future—a $15 billion capital program over sixteen years—and Bridging the Future—a seven-year $2 billion plan approved by directors in December 2024—to improve regional mobility through modernization initiatives across Northern Illinois' toll roads.
