North Central College's women's soccer team ended its season after a 5-1 loss to Washington University in St. Louis during the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday, November 16. The Cardinals completed their season with a 16-6 record, while Washington University advanced with an 18-0-2 record.
The match began with both teams competing for control in the midfield. North Central earned the first corner kick in the eighth minute but did not convert it into a scoring opportunity. In the 12th minute, North Central goalkeeper Lily Mattison stopped a close-range shot from Washington University to keep the game scoreless.
Washington University scored first in the 38th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area. As halftime approached, North Central defenders Lauren Richards and Mackenzie Loomis blocked several shots inside their own box to prevent further goals.
In the second half, Washington University extended its lead with another goal in the 54th minute. Shortly after, North Central had an opportunity following a corner kick when Jordan Lange took a shot through traffic, but it was saved by Washington University's goalkeeper.
After conceding a third goal, North Central's Kassandra Salviola drew a yellow card from Washington University's Sophie Viscovich and set up a free kick near midfield. Salviola’s attempt was collected by the opposing keeper.
Washington University added two more goals later in the half to make it 5-0. With less than three minutes remaining, North Central intercepted a pass that allowed Lange to score and end Washington University's shutout bid.
This appearance marked North Central's deepest run in program history at the NCAA Tournament. The team also achieved notable success during conference play by winning both regular season and tournament titles in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) with an undefeated 8-0 record.
