Residents of Wheaton can recycle old holiday lights at the Public Works Storage Facility located at 820 W. Liberty Drive. The collection site is open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the program runs until Friday, Jan. 30.
The recycling program accepts strands of incandescent or LED lights in any condition, but it does not accept lawn ornaments or other types of decorations. Participants are asked not to place the lights in bags or boxes when dropping them off.
According to the City, signs will direct visitors to the designated drop-off area inside the facility gate. Elgin Recycling will collect and process the light strings for their copper and plastic materials, ensuring that no materials are shipped overseas (https://www.elginrecycling.com).
The initiative is open not only to residents but also businesses, schools, and organizations in Wheaton. There is no restriction on the quantity of lights that can be recycled through this program.
