The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the arrest of a member of the Latin Kings gang in Illinois. The individual, identified as Juan Espinoza Martinez, allegedly placed a bounty on Gregory Bovino, the Commander at Large of the U.S. Border Patrol. This development follows information received on October 3, 2025, indicating that a "hit" had been ordered against Chief Bovino.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) tracked down Espinoza Martinez in Burr Ridge, Illinois, where he was apprehended on October 6, 2025. The investigation revealed a Snapchat conversation from a user named "Juan," who appeared to offer $2,000 for information leading to Chief Bovino's capture and $10,000 for taking him down. A response mentioning "LK" suggested involvement by the Latin Kings.
The Department of Justice is prosecuting Espinoza Martinez for soliciting the murder of a senior law enforcement official. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on the arrest: "Depraved individuals like Juan Espinoza Martinez – who do not value human life and threaten law enforcement– do NOT belong in this country. We will not allow criminal gangs to put hits on U.S. government officials and our law enforcement officers."
Secretary Noem emphasized that any threats or actions against law enforcement would be met with full legal prosecution.
Espinoza Martinez is reportedly an illegal alien from Mexico whose entry date into the United States remains unknown.
