Residents in Westmont are being encouraged to keep fallen leaves away from storm drains and gutters this fall to help prevent flooding and protect the water supply. According to local officials, raking and properly disposing of leaves can also reduce pollution caused by phosphorus from decomposing leaves, which contributes to algae blooms and lowers oxygen levels for fish.

The Village of Westmont has outlined several options for residents to manage their leaves. Residents can compost leaves on their property, mulch them with a mower for lawn nourishment, or bag them for pickup through the community’s Yard Waste Program.

DuPage County Stormwater Management has released a video on its YouTube channel highlighting the need to keep leaves out of storm drains and sewers as a way to avoid flooding and related issues.

Flood Brothers provides yard waste collection services in Westmont from early April through early December each year. This season, the Yard Waste Program will conclude on Friday, December 12. More details about the program are available on the Village website.

As part of its annual effort, Westmont is offering free leaf collection between November 3 and November 29, 2025. During this period, residents may place unlimited kraft paper bags containing only leaves at the curb without needing a yard waste sticker. Other types of yard waste such as grass clippings must be separated into different bags or containers and require a sticker.
