The Wheaton Community Relations Commission has announced the return of the Wheaton Gives Back program, offering residents two ways to help those in need this October. The initiative includes a winter gear drive and a volunteer opportunity for food distribution.
Through a partnership with the People’s Resource Center, Downtown Wheaton Association, Wheaton Park District, and other organizations, the commission is collecting new and gently used winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens. These items will be distributed by the People’s Resource Center to local residents who need them. Collection boxes are available at various locations in downtown Wheaton—including businesses such as Benjamin F. Edwards, Egg'lectic Café, Starbucks, and others—as well as at Central Athletic Complex and Wheaton Community Center. Donations can be made through the end of October.
In addition to the gear drive, volunteers are needed on Friday, Oct. 24 to help unload food collected during the People’s Resource Center’s annual Stuff-A-Truck event at 201 S. Naperville Road. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old and able to perform heavy lifting and standing tasks during one of two available shifts. Those interested in volunteering can email volunteers@peoplesrc.org for more information or to sign up.
According to the commission: "The Wheaton Community Relations Commission strives to promote increased participation in all aspects of community life and foster a sense of shared community among all residents."
The program reflects ongoing efforts by local organizations to address seasonal needs and support vulnerable members of the community.
