North Central quarterback Garret Wilson, Wheaton defensive end Rex Kroger, and Carroll kicker Matthew Swink have been named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Student-Athletes of the Week. The announcement was made Monday following notable performances during the league’s opening weekend.
Garret Wilson, a sophomore from Edmond, Oklahoma, led North Central to a 62-0 victory over Carthage. He completed 20 of 27 passes for 295 yards and achieved a career-high five touchdowns. Wilson also contributed on the ground with five rushes for 70 yards.
On defense, Rex Kroger helped Wheaton secure a 50-7 win at Augustana by scoring the opening touchdown with a 57-yard interception return during Augustana's first series. The sophomore added four solo tackles, two quarterback hurries—the most in the game—and one tackle for loss.
Carroll’s Matthew Swink was recognized for his special teams performance in their 41-29 loss to WashU. Swink remained perfect this season on extra-point attempts (3-for-3) and successfully made field goals from distances of 35 and 28 yards.
The weekly CCIW football honors also included Jereme Ombogo of North Park and Alex Araiza of Millikin as previous recipients for offensive and defensive performances respectively on September 15, while Wesley McCloud from North Park was honored for special teams that same week.
Garret Wilson stated: "I’m grateful for my teammates and coaches who put me in a position to succeed." Rex Kroger said: "Scoring on defense is always exciting. I just wanted to help set the tone early." Matthew Swink commented: "Staying consistent is important to me every week."
