The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team ended its 2025 season with a loss in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The Titans were defeated by No. 13 SUNY Cortland, who secured a 23-8 victory on Saturday night, May 10, in York, Pennsylvania. This result left Illinois Wesleyan with a final season record of 14-3, while SUNY Cortland improved to 18-2.
Gage Black and Bob Boone, both fifth-year players, led the Titans' scoring efforts with two goals each in their last game for the team. Sophomore Timothy McHugh contributed two assists to round out his performance.
In faceoffs, senior Nick Schroeder had a notable showing with a 14-for-23 success rate and collected five ground balls. His teammate Nick Horrocks led the team with six ground balls, followed by junior Kade Miers who picked up four.
Defensively, Miers and junior Billy McHugh each caused two turnovers. Horrocks and senior Sam Skelton also contributed one caused turnover apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Colin Tervo delivered another standout performance for the Titans. He matched his previous record of 23 saves set during the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship just a week prior. Tervo ends his collegiate career as only the second goalkeeper at IWU to surpass 500 career saves, finishing with a total of 549 saves.
SUNY Cortland took an early lead against Illinois Wesleyan, ending the first quarter ahead at 5-0. The Titans responded in the second period when freshman Carlo Adams assisted Billy McHugh for their first goal of the game.
Despite efforts from Tervo and goals from Black that cut into Cortland's lead momentarily during the second quarter, Illinois Wesleyan went into halftime trailing 9-3 after three consecutive goals from Cortland.
Cortland extended its lead further in the third period before IWU managed to end its scoring drought through Ike Eastburn's goal assisted by Timothy McHugh. However, despite additional goals from Boone and Horrocks in subsequent plays, SUNY Cortland maintained control throughout the match.
Ultimately unable to close the gap further after Weinberg's late goal made it an 18-8 scoreline with just over eight minutes remaining, Illinois Wesleyan fell short as SUNY Cortland closed out strong for a decisive win at 23-8.
