In recognition of Black History Month, attention is drawn to the remarkable contributions of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, also known as the Six Triple Eight. This battalion holds a unique place in history as the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during World War II.

The battalion's mission was challenging. They were deployed to Europe with the task of sorting through a significant backlog of mail intended for American troops. Warehouses were filled with letters and packages that needed to be processed so soldiers could receive vital communication from their loved ones back home.

The Six Triple Eight operated under the motto “No Mail, Low Morale,” which highlighted the importance of their work. Despite facing long hours and harsh conditions, they successfully sorted millions of letters. However, upon returning home, their efforts went largely unrecognized until nearly 80 years later when they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2022.

Their story is one of courage and dedication, illustrating how they broke barriers during a time when such achievements often went unnoticed. As Black History Month is celebrated, it is essential to remember their legacy and acknowledge the path they paved for future generations who serve our country.
