Illinois commemorates its admission as the 21st state of the United States on December 3, 1818. The event is celebrated annually as Illinois Statehood Day.

The state's early history involved Native American tribes such as the Illiniwek inhabiting the region. European exploration and settlement began with the French in the late 1600s. Following transitions in governance from British to American, Illinois became its own territory in 1809 and achieved statehood after drafting its first constitution in 1818.

Despite facing challenges like prairie agriculture and slavery debates, Illinois thrived through innovations such as John Deere's steel plow and infrastructure projects like the Illinois and Michigan Canal.

By the mid-19th century, Illinois had evolved into an agricultural and transportation hub, with Chicago emerging as a central economic center.
