State Representative Amy Grant is urging the community to come together in opposition to all forms of child abuse and neglect as April is recognized as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Grant highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the serious issue of child abuse, which includes sexual, physical, and emotional maltreatment, as well as severe neglect.

“Child abuse is a tragic violation of the innocent and the vulnerable,” said Rep. Grant. “This month, we not only shine light on this pressing issue but also to honor the resilience of survivors. It’s essential that as a community, we understand the signs of abuse, which can range from sudden changes in behavior to unexplained injuries, to effectively keep our children safe.”

Rep. Grant emphasized the significance of community and government collaboration in providing a safe environment for all children. “I encourage everyone to learn the signs of Child Abuse and reminder that if you see something, say something,” she stated.

To effectively combat child abuse, it’s crucial to recognize the warning signs. Some of the red flags that may indicate a child is suffering from abuse include visible signs of physical abuse, sudden shifts in mood, returning to earlier behaviors, fear of going home, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, changes in school performance and attendance, lack of personal care and hygiene, risk-taking behaviors, and inappropriate sexual behaviors.

If there is a suspicion that a child has been harmed or is at risk of harm due to abuse or neglect, individuals are advised not to hesitate to call 911 or the 24-hour Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-2873. In non-emergency situations, reports of suspected child abuse or neglect can be made using the Online Reporting System.

For more information on Child Abuse and Prevention initiatives, individuals can contact Rep. Grant’s office at 331-218-4182.

State Representative Amy Grant, currently serving her 3rd term as State Representative in the General Assembly, represents the 47th district, which includes various communities in DuPage County.
