The Illinois State Library is proud to announce the continuation of the Illinois Veterans History Project (IVHP), a significant initiative aimed at honoring the courageous men and women who have selflessly served our great nation. The project, in response to the Library of Congress' call for the collection of firsthand narratives of U.S. military veterans, is dedicated to creating a permanent record of Illinois veterans' names and stories, ensuring that their sacrifices and contributions are never forgotten.
With over 6,700 records from Illinois veterans spanning from the Civil War era to the present day, the IVHP offers a rich collection for exploration. Among these records are 675 captivating oral histories that provide a unique glimpse into the experiences of these brave individuals. The IVHP collection can be searched by name, war, or hometown of veterans, allowing users to dive into the fascinating oral history and interviews that offer an intimate look into the lives of Illinois heroes.
The IVHP is not limited to veterans alone; it also welcomes participation from civilians and their cherished family members. Individuals are encouraged to share their own stories, photos, and mementos to contribute to this meaningful project. Participating is made easy through the completion of the Illinois Patriot Information Form, which can be obtained in a large-print version. The form can be submitted to the Illinois State Library via email or mail.
