A man who allegedly robbed a woman with an infant at gunpoint in the Schaumburg Mall parking lot on Thursday was captured after leading police on a chase.
Deputy Chief Reid Foltyniewicz of the Oak Brook Police Department provided a comprehensive briefing on the dramatic turn of events that unfolded.
The woman with an infant was robbed by a man, described by police only as a black male armed with a firearm, at around 2:10 p.m. in the parking lot of the Schaumburg Mall.
Foltyniewicz said following the armed robbery the alleged perpetrator’s vehicle was located by license plate readers located at Route 83 and 16th Street in Oak Brook, which alerted law enforcement to the presence of the offending vehicle.
This alert prompted an immediate response from the Oak Brook Police Department.
As officers arrived at Oak Brook Center, they spotted the offending vehicle attempting to flee.
In the process, the suspect's vehicle rammed another car while trying to exit onto 22nd Street from the outer ring road.
A high-speed pursuit ensued, with the suspect attempting to evade the police.
During the pursuit, the suspect resorted to dangerous tactics, including ramming a police vehicle.
The situation came to a dramatic conclusion on Southbound I-294 near Ogden Avenue, between Hinsdale and Western Springs, where law enforcement successfully apprehended the suspect.
Foltyniewicz expressed his gratitude that the incident concluded without harm to any individuals involved, especially considering the presence of an infant during the armed robbery.
"The most important thing is that no one was hurt or injured,” he said.
He also noted the successful recovery of the firearm used in the crime.
The suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified by police, was taken into custody. Further details about the suspect were not disclosed.
"The next update will likely be a press release from us and State's Attorney Bob Berlin. We appreciate all your support; thank you!" Deputy Chief Foltyniewicz concluded.
