10. DISCUSSION

A. Bridge weight restrictions

Director Snyder shared with the Committee that IDOT has recently inspected three County bridges and decreased the allowable weight limits. The three bridges are: Geneva Road over the West Branch of the DuPage River, Warrenville Road over the East Branch of the DuPage River and Bloomingdale Road over the Canadian National Railroad. For all three bridges, the reduced weight limits will prohibit County snow plows from crossing these structures. For the 2022-2023 winter season, the Division of Transportation is evaluating options to plow these bridges, including retrofitting smaller County vehicles and entering into agreements with local partners to plow on our behalf.

Both the Geneva Road and Warrenville Road bridges have engineering underway to replace the bridge. The DOT is targeting bidding the work in 2023 subject to plan readiness and acquisition of needed right-of-way.

For the Bloomingdale Road bridge, the DOT is evaluating options to retrofit the bridge in order to increase the allowable loading. Scheduling of this retrofit will depend on coordination with the CN Railroad for needed access and approvals.
