Out of the $7 million to be distributed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to local governments for infrastructure improvements, the Village of Geneva — in partnership with the City of St. Charles — is set to receive $320,000.

State Sen. Karina Villa (D-Batavia) recently took to social media to hail the infrastructure funding and the Rebuild Illinois Program's expected impact for Geneva.

“Upgrading our roads will help accommodate local truck traffic in Geneva and ensure a safer driving experience for residents and visitors,” Villa said in an April 9 Facebook page post. “This critical infrastructure project will give our community the resources it needs to attract business, manage growth and improve local quality of life.”

The money for the grants comes from the IDOT’s Truck Route Access Program, according to a news release on Villa’s official website. Applicants for the grants must have projects in mind that will upgrade existing roadways to accommodate 80,000-pound trucks.

Geneva plans to use the $320,000 to make improvements that will connect Illinois Route 38 to truck routes, according to the release.

Acting Transportation Secretary Omer Osman said that, as a major transportation hub for the nation, Illinois depends on trucking as a cornerstone of its economy, the press release stated.
